Ref. 33792/34

Sir,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter

of the 24th August, enclosing a copy of the despatch of

the Governor of Hong Kong, covering the position with regard

to Mui Tsai in the Colony up to 31st May last.

My Committee has carefully considered this despatch

and I was instructed to make the following observations:-

The report states that the Lady Inspectors paid

1,517 visits during the half year under review. As there

are 2,508 Mui Tsai, it would appear that in six months only

three Mui Tsai in every five were visited.

The Committee

think it desirable that every Mui Tsai should be visited at

least once in every six months, though once in every four

months would be preferable. In these circumstances, we

imagine that it would be necessary to increase the number of

Lady Inspectors, but we presume that this would not involve

any considerable increase in expenditure.

The Committee

would much appreciate being informed what is the salary of

these Inspectors.
